The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans made history with the first-ever Girls Flag Football Texas State Championship, June 14 at DATCU Stadium at the University of North Texas (UNT). This landmark event had 8 teams representing their respective Regional Champion victories.
The top teams from the Cowboys Girls Flag Football League and Texans Girls Flag Football Leagues competed for the inaugural state title and showcase the growing talent and passion for the sport this weekend.
Representing the Houston Texans are the Houston Memorial Mustangs, who went 1-2 in day one of pool play on Saturday. Day two the Mustangs came out charging knocking off the Top Seed Round Rock Dragons 25 -12 in game one, and in game two, they slowed down the fast paced Eastwood Troopers to get the 19-6 victory to send them in to the Girls Flag Championship game and claim the Houston Texans League Championship.
Representing the Dallas Cowboys are the red hot and undefeated Heath Hawks, who came into the tournament riding a 22-0 winning streak. The Hawks went undefeated 3-0 in Day one of Pool play and in Day two, knocked off Anderson Trojans 26 -12. In the Dallas Cowboys league Championship game they faced off against the El Dorado Aztecs who had just came off their OT win over Newman South.
Lead by USA Football’s Camp MVP QB #14 Haley Harper , the Hawks stuck fast and often taking a 24-0 win over the aztecs to claim the Dallas Cowboys League Championship.
Moving in to game three of the day for both teams, the stage was set back outside at DATCU Stadium as early morning rain forced the morning games to be moved and played inside the UNT indoor practice facility.
The Houston Texans had on hand at the game Hannah McNair, Chief Community Officer and Vice President of the Houston Texans Foundation, Toro the Houston Texans Mascot and members of the Texans Cheerleaders.
The Dallas Cowboys brought out the 2023 NFL Pro Football Hall of Famer and Dallas Cowboy legendary defensive end DeMarcus Ware, Rowdy the Cowboys mascot and members of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
Early in the first half the Mustangs strike first with a touchdown to the back of the end zone to go up 6-0 over the Hawks. The Hawks were out of rhythm the first couple of series as they were unable to convert a first down. Later in the half Qb Haley Harper connects on a pass that goes 40+ yards to put the hawks on the board and up 7-0.
The Mustangs would go on to struggle as the hawks defense started to apply the pressure and forcing some mustang turnovers.
Late in the second half the Mustangs would throw a pick six which put the Hawks in a commanding lead. On the ensuing drive the Hawks would pick the ball off again to end the game with a final score of 25-6 and claim the first ever Girls Flag Texas State Championship and bragging rights to the Dallas Cowboys.
Both teams were presented with State medals, silver medals were handed out by Hannah McNair to the Memorial Mustang players and Coaches as well as a Texans MVP gold wrestling belt Award to #18.
Gold medals were handed out to the Heath Hawks Players and Coaches, and a MVP gold wrestling belt Award to #14 Haley Harper. The State Championship trophy was presented to the team from NFL Pro Football Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware.
